The Henry Moore Institute

74 The Headrow, Leeds, West Yorkshire, LS1 3AH

This summer the Henry Moore Institute celebrates the work of one of the most important post-war Japanese artists, Jiro Takamatsu (1936–98), whose experimentation with form, material and perception tested the limits of sculpture.

Presenting over seventy sculptures, drawings and documents on loan from major collections in Japan, USA and Europe, our exhibition places its focus on Takamatsu’s work from the 1960s and 1970s, a time when radical art was flourishing in Japan.

The Temperature of Sculpture starts in 1961, the moment when Takamatsu began to work in three dimensions, and takes us through to 1977, looking at key bodies of work – from sculptural actions on the streets of Tokyo, to material investigations of shadow, space and perspective.
