West Yorkshire Playhouse
Playhouse Square, Quarry Hill, Leeds, LS2 7UP
Faustus' restless quest for knowledge and his insatiable desire for notoriety drive him to make a pact with the Devil in return for the power to perform the black arts. This life-changing decision propels him into a heady, celebrity-obsessed world, as magician and illusionist to the rich and famous. Quenching sexual desires as his power grows, he must question whether the price was worth paying. The universal truths held in this 400-year-old cautionary tale resonate powerfully with the greed of today's consumer-led society.
In a new partnership West Yorkshire Playhouse comes together with the iconic Glasgow Citizens Theatre with a contemporary co-production of Christopher Marlowe's mythic tale DOCTOR FAUSTUS. This new production firmly places this classic story in today's consumer and celebrity driven world. Directed by Citizens Theatre Artistic Director Dominic Hill, who makes his Playhouse debut, this production reunites the team that created Dundee Rep's critically acclaimed PEER GYNT. Featuring two re-written acts by Playhouse Associate Colin Teevan Christopher Marlowe's tale of mankind's insatiable greed for power is launched head on into the 21st century. The production opens in Leeds before transferring to Glasgow.
