Dark & Lovely: Installation And Performance

- 12:00pm every day until Fri 21 Feb 2014
Union 105 Gallery
105 Chapeltown Road, Chapeltown, Leeds, LS7 3HY
Rooting herself in Chapeltown's salons and beauty shops since August 2013, Selina Thompson has been exploring afro hair: its politics, its connotations, and what it tells us about being Black, British and young in the UK today.
Dark and Lovely is a series of performances (6.30pm), accompanied by a week-long installation at Union 105 (12.30 - 6pm). The project is inspired by Selina's research into the cultural and social debate surrounding black hair, and how this has contributed to our understanding of black identity.
Taking centre stage inside a giant tumble-weave, Selina explores the complexities of this debate using recorded conversation, music, written text and the ball of hair itself. Over the course of 40 minutes, watch her transform the 'gross' structure into something beautiful, which can transcend the weight of all the connotations placed upon it.
As well as performances, the tumble-weave can also be viewed as an interactive installation throughout the week.
This project is generously supported by Leeds Inspired, East Street Arts and Arts Council England
