Leeds Film Festival Artist: Biserka

Leeds Film Festival Artist: Biserka
Written by Abby Dix-Mason Leeds Inspired  30/03/2016

Our third artist commissioned to produce one of four Leeds Film Festival posters is Biserka, an embroidery artist from Newcastle, living and working in Leeds.Biserka's work is figurative with strong narrative elements and explores the closeness between the two worlds we all inhabit; the ‘real’ world and that which exists within our own heads. All her pieces are created and sewn freehand, influenced by the stories of classical mythology mixed with a healthy dose of sci-fi and comic culture. The delicacy of Biserka's work contrasts with the subject matter which often celebrates the strange and the melancholic.   This May she will...

Sunny Side Up

Sunny Side Up
Written by Sunny Bank Mills  16/11/2015

Sunny by name and sunny by nature. We are Sunny Bank Mills Gallery, a new-ish art and heritage space and creative hub in Farsley, mid way between Leeds and Bradford. Home is a north lit, 3,000 square foot cloth warehouse housed on the site of a former worsted mill. Most of our furniture has been “found” in the mill; we love giving old things new life. This table was formerly used for repairing engines in the mechanics workshop – now it serves as, amongst other things, a cake stand, plinth, unpacking bench and boardroom table! Oh, and we all sit...

If You're Scrappy And You Know It

If You're Scrappy And You Know It
Written by Abby Dix-Mason Leeds Inspired  01/12/2014

Last week we popped into Scrap Leeds, a treasure trove of recycled resources for art and creative play based in Farsley's historic Sunny Bank Mills. This is a shop where you can't help spending hours rooting through boxes of old buttons, rummaging through reams of fabric remnants and contemplating the best use for a job lot of discarded circuit boards. We took a few photo's while we were there and thought we'd share them with you but if you'd like to find out more information about Scrap's making workshops (for all ages), creative resources and opening hours visit www.scrapstuff.co.uk. (Arthur The Dog isn't for...

Felt Mistress Comes To Town

Felt Mistress Comes To Town
Written by Abby Dix-Mason Leeds Inspired  19/02/2013

We are beyond excited that the one and only Felt Mistress is coming to town on Saturday 23rd February. She graces us with her felty presence at the fabulous Colours May Vary bookshop at Munro House for a day of crafting, drawing and general merriment. We like her because, when not sewing, she likes to dream she'll live to see the day when you can download French Fancies "off of the Internet".If you're not acquainted with the leading lady of boiled wool then scroll down to see some of her colourful creations and for more information about the event click...

A little help from your friends

A little help from your friends
Written by Abby Dix-Mason Leeds Inspired  05/07/2012

So how exactly do you go from being a manager in dentist practice to being an artist running your own shop in Birds Yard - one of Leeds' finest vintage and craft emporiums? According to Chloe McGenn it's a mixture of happy coincidence, determination and a cast of fabulous friends. "When I tell people what I did before I owned a shop, they're usually surprised and often don't believe me. Until 2008, I was a manager of a dental practice, with no tattoos, normal hair and smart clothes. Whilst I loved working with the public, the other staff, and even my...
