Leeds Enterprise: showcasing Leeds' independent scene

Leeds Enterprise: showcasing Leeds' independent scene
Written by Lily Ackroyd-Willoughby  25/04/2017

Impatience is good. It creates the biggest events, drives the best businesses, and inspires the most creative projects.Leeds is a city of start-ups. From the abundance of recently established cafés, venues and artist-led spaces to pop-up restaurants, city-wide food festivals and digital innovators, the entrepreneurial spirit in the city is very much alive. It’s a place where the go-getters, the creative types and those with big ideas do well, and the community of independent businesses is strong. Working for yourself is increasingly seen as an attractive and viable option for young people starting out and the number of young businesses has boomed....

Written by Leeds Print Workshop  21/06/2016

Leeds Print Workshop, a new hub for printmaking in the centre of Leeds, will be opening its doors this summer. The workshop will be a co-operative, membership-based printmaking studio, open to all those with an interest in print. Members will come to the space to do screen printing, intaglio, linocut, bookbinding and other print techniques in a friendly, well-equipped workshop. Una Comics: On Sanity

Una Comics: On Sanity
Written by Una  20/06/2016

My new comic book, On Sanity: One day in two lives,  is a rather special one. Not only because it has given me a chance to improve on a zine I made in 2008 but because, well… how many artists get to make a work with their mum?  When I got interested in drawing cartoons about life, one of the first drawings I made was a sequence about being stuck in a tunnel with both ends blocked and deciding to escape through the ceiling. This was based on a description I'd read of what it was like to develop a psychosis. At...

LIFF30 Poster: Graham Pilling

LIFF30 Poster: Graham Pilling
Written by Abby Dix-Mason Leeds Inspired  13/04/2016

Introducing Graham Pilling, the fourth of our Leeds Film Festival poster designers. Graham is a graphic artist who produces bold and compelling design and illustration work under the moniker Army of Cats.“I'm fortunate that my work spans a nice mix of client and personal projects. One month I may be working on branding for a startup, and  the next it might be a record cover or t-shirt art. It allows me to have a nice little toolbox of different styles to dip into and it keeps my work interesting – both for me and hopefully its intended audience! I guess I'm...

Windows Of Leeds

Windows Of Leeds
Written by Something More  06/04/2016

We are Something More; a design studio based here in Leeds that recently led the design and development of Leeds Train Station’s new installation, Windows of Leeds. The project has been a huge collaborative effort, working alongside a team of other local creatives. We thought it might be interesting to hear more about the design thinking that lies behind it.Following on from the success of the British Art Show 8’s arrival in Leeds, an exciting wave of new cultural and visual arts projects were happening around the city – championed under the ‘Unfold’ banner. As part of this programme, a new commission, supported by...

Leeds Film Festival Artist: Biserka

Leeds Film Festival Artist: Biserka
Written by Abby Dix-Mason Leeds Inspired  30/03/2016

Our third artist commissioned to produce one of four Leeds Film Festival posters is Biserka, an embroidery artist from Newcastle, living and working in Leeds.Biserka's work is figurative with strong narrative elements and explores the closeness between the two worlds we all inhabit; the ‘real’ world and that which exists within our own heads. All her pieces are created and sewn freehand, influenced by the stories of classical mythology mixed with a healthy dose of sci-fi and comic culture. The delicacy of Biserka's work contrasts with the subject matter which often celebrates the strange and the melancholic.   This May she will...
