Short Film: Marching On Together

Short Film: Marching On Together
Written by Adam Hughes  13/11/2015

Earlier this year I wrote a play called Marching On Together, which focused on the fall of the Leeds United hooligan scene set against the backdrop of the miners strike. It was set over the 1984/5 football season, which had the highest number of arrests for football related violence and was also a season which culminated in tragedy, with the Valley Parade fire in Bradford. It was a year which signified a great deal of change, particularly for small Yorkshire mining towns which were now becoming unrecognisable. The play embarked on a successful London run yet, for me, I always knew...

Dementia Friendly Performance of Beryl

Dementia Friendly Performance of Beryl
Written by Abby Dix-Mason Leeds Inspired  12/07/2015

West Yorkshire Playhouse is staging its second dementia-friendly performance with a matinee of Maxine Peake’s play Beryl on Tuesday 14 July at 2pm. This follows the theatre's first dementia-friendly performance of its Christmas musical – Irving Berlin’s White Christmas – last December which was attended by over 400 people. Beryl is an incredible account of Yorkshire woman Beryl Burton’s outstanding sporting achievements and the Playhouse Community Development Team have been visiting community groups, care homes and events with reminiscence objects relating to cycling history, and encouraging people to share their stories of cycling and sport.  The production has been adapted especially for the dementia-friendly...

The exhibition, Hit So Hard, presents large format photographs of the Leeds Roller Dolls in action alongside creative responses by artists associated with Inkwell Arts. If, like us, you're a bit in awe of the women with wheels but don't quite get the rules of the game take a look at this cracking film. And don't forget; there is no ball.  @LeedsRollerDoll...

Earlier this year Balbir Singh Dance Company (BSDC) received a grant from Leeds Inspired to create Full Contact, a new dance performance to celebrate the Rugby League World Cup games in Leeds. Elisa Heikkilä, BSDC Company Manager, tells us about the dance/rugby connection."BSDC is no stranger to working across sport and culture. BSDC created Synchronised, a pool-based spectacular with over 150 performers bringing together dance, synchronised swimming and music for summer 2012 as part of Yorkshire's Cultural Olympiad, commissioned by imove. As part of this the company worked with Team GB. BSDC was also commissioned to create three high profile pieces...
